Chicago Architecture Center
The Windy City has many wonderful museums, and the Chicago Architecture Center is my new favorite. It’s located on East Wacker Drive near the Michigan Avenue bridge, and its huge multi-story windows provide panoramic views of the Chicago River and many of the magnificent skyscrapers that Chicago is known for.
A special exhibition called Highrises featured huge, vibrant photos of 1920’s Art Deco buildings. The artist, Chris Hytha, used drones to capture high-resolution photos and then digitally combined and enhanced them. The resulting images have details that can’t be seen from the sidewalk. They were mesmerizing.
We also enjoyed other exhibits at the CAC, including huge models of iconic skyscrapers from around the world, innovative projects for renewing and repurposing old structures, and an impressive scale model of the city of Chicago with 4,250 buildings. It was a unique, inviting, and exciting space. They did an excellent job of cultivating an appreciation of architectural design and urban planning, through history and into the future. You don’t have to be a trained architect to love a visit to the CAC.
