After several days of rain, Saturday was sunny and clear. It was early October, and the trees in central Vermont were at their colorful fall peak. It was a perfect day for a drive with our friends Hope and Dave!
We were in Waitsfield, Vermont, a picturesque town in the Mad River Valley, between the Green Mountains and the Northfield Mountains. We decided to try a self-driving tour recommended by the hotel - a 40-mile route that included eight historic covered bridges.
After a tasty breakfast, we hit the road. There were stunning views at every turn! It seemed as if a cosmic artist had splashed the mountains with red, orange, and yellow paint. The only challenge was finding safe spots to pull over so we could take photos and soak in the view.
It was fun seeing the old covered bridges close up. Some have remained largely unchanged for 150 years or more! I admit that since most of the bridges were painted Vermont barn red, they all started to look the same. Cell coverage was spotty, which made following the route tricky. But we didn’t really care, since we were together! As always, Hope and Dave kept us laughing all the way. (Just ask Dave to tell the story about “What’s New, Pussycat?”)
After our covered bridges tour, we stopped at the Waitsfield Farmers Market. A bluegrass band was playing, and it was fun seeing everyone out with their friends and dogs, enjoying the live music, the market, and the perfect weather.
