Moving Day: Chania to Athens to NYC

We had two moving days in November. First, we flew from Chania to Athens. We left Crete in sunshine, and arrived in Athens amidst rainclouds, just like our previous arrival in the capital. (Aside: Isn’t it strange how the spinning airplane propellers look still in the photos?)

We had three full days in Athens to enjoy the beautiful fall weather and do a little more exploring. We toured one more archeological site, visited two museums (ancient technology, modern art), and of course, enjoyed more great food.

Our two and half months in Greece had been fun, enlightening, and memorable. We agreed that we’d had enough of Santorini but would like to return to Crete again, and there’s a place on the Greek mainland called Meteora that is on my wish list.

On the second Moving Day, we flew from Athens to New York City. We had a few hours’ layover in London, where the gray, wet weather was probably typical this time of year. It didn’t matter because we were high and dry in an airport lounge.

Midway through our flight from London to New York City, somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, there was this incredible view from my airplane window. The sky looked like this for an hour or more. We had departed London in the late afternoon, so I think it was sunset (or dusk), visible much longer at cruising altitude. It was a glorious welcome “home” to the USA.
