On the Road: Trinidad to Cobb
We left Trinidad on a gorgeous, sunny day and went south along the Scenic Drive that hugged the coast. The views were stunning! We stopped at Moonstone Beach so I could dip my toes in the water; it wasn’t technically the Pacific Ocean (which lay across a large sandbar), but it was close enough. We reveled in the cool breezes and took deep breaths of the salty air. In a few hours, we would be in a hot, dry valley, far from the ocean.
Then we hopped back onto the Redwood Highway (CA-101), stopping briefly in Eureka and Ferndale to see the cool Victorian houses.
We’d had our fill of redwood forests, so we didn’t drive the 30-mile Avenue of the Giants in Humbold Redwoods State Park. We did hop off the Redwood Highway for one short hike at Founders Grove. It was nice to have one last walk among the ancient redwoods. We were most impressed with the Dyerville Giant, an enormous fallen redwood that had stood 360-370 feet tall, was 17 feet in diameter, and probably weighed around 50 tons. When the Dyerville Giant fell in 1991, it triggered seismographs and sounded like a train crash heard a half mile away.
The drive to Cobb was uneventful. Our vacation had been fun, but we both looked forward to relaxing for the next three weeks.
