Our Home in Chania

Crete is the largest Greek Island, about the size of Ireland. It has its own culture, distinct from the rest of Greece. It’s very old, inhabited since before 7000 BCE. And it’s mythical: it was the birthplace of Zeus and the home of King Minos.

Chania (pronounced HAA-nee-uh) is the former capital of Crete, and the current capital city of the westernmost part of the island. With a population of about 55,000, it’s more than three times bigger than Nafplio.

We’re staying in a modern apartment in central Chania. It’s roomy and comfortable, with many of the details that we’ve come to appreciate in the best Airbnb units, such as the wine and snacks, a welcome gift from our hosts.

We have a balcony overlooking the street. Across from us is a kitchen supply store that displays its wares out front. Somehow, all those pots magically disappear every evening and are back by the time we wake up the next morning.

We’re just a ten minute walk from the old Venetian harbor, with an old lighthouse and a promenade lined with restaurants and shops. It’s going to be fun exploring Chania!
