Our Home in San Miguel

We landed in Queretaro, Mexico and walked outside into warmth and sunshine! After ten mostly gray days in Vienna and Austin, it was marvelous to be under clear blue skies, with that saturated hue one sees at high altitudes. We were in the central highlands of Mexico, at elevations of around 6,200 feet (1,900 meters). Our friendly driver Rafa, whom we had met last year, was there to greet us and drive us to San Miguel de Allende, about 90 minutes’ drive away.

Our home for the next month is in a casa in Zona Centro, the heart of the city of San Miguel. We are just a few blocks from the artisan’s market, the food market, and Jardin Allende, the plaza where both locals and tourists like to hang out. It’s a great location, not only because of its proximity to restaurants and shopping, but also because our neighborhood is relatively flat. When we visited San Miguel for the first time last year, there was a very steep uphill walk to our bed and breakfast. This will be so much easier.

Our beautiful casa is in the colonial style, with soaring domed ceilings of brick and cupolas that let in more light. We have two bedrooms, two living rooms, and two private patios - so much space! One of the reasons we chose this casa is that when our kids join us here in San Miguel, Amy can stay in our extra bedroom, and Danny and Mei can stay in the loft apartment across the shared courtyard.

The casa is liberally decorated with top-quality Mexican folk art, inside and out. It’s wonderful to be surrounded by these constant reminders that we are in a city of artists and art-lovers. Right now, we are very happy to be nomads, but one day, I’d like to have a place where we can display artsy mementos from our travels.
