San Francisco Family and Friends

Our son Danny moved to the Mission District last may. He’s renting the top floor of a house and living with his girlfriend Mei, his buddy and co-founder Yash, and two roommates who also have tech startups. It’s a big place with 12-foot ceilings and an outdoor deck with nice views. A large front room functions as their office - the ultimate work-from-home setup. Mei did a great job furnishing and decorating the place. My favorite feature was a hydroponic garden with automated light and watering.

Danny and Mei had us over for dinner a couple of times. One night we had salad with freshly harvested greens and roast pork loin with romesco sauce. YUM! Another night we had three kinds of homemade pizza, flash grilled in their Ooni oven. Double YUM! (We also enjoyed dining in some restaurants together, but these home-cooked meals were my favorite.)

Karina is a first cousin on my dad’s side. She and her family (husband Albert and son Adrian) live in San Mateo, and joined us downtown for dim sum at one of our favorite San Francisco restaurants, Yank Sing. After lunch, we walked to the Ferry Building for a some dessert and sunshine. Adrian is a high school junior and just started a new club called “Tastes and Traditions,” to bring kids together for tasting foods and playing games from different countries.

We also met up with friends who live in the Bay Area. They were just as wonderful and fun as ever, and we never ran out of things to talk about!

  • Our college friend Roger had dim sum with us in Chinatown. It was fascinating to learn about Roger’s work as a child psychologist in San Francisco’s public health system. He recently vacationed with his family in Kenya, and shared some incredible safari photos.

  • My Accenture friends Pat and Katherine, who both live in East Bay, met me at Sales Force Tower. We bought lunch (Mexican food) at the Mercado on the plaza and took it up to Sales Force Park, where a jazz band was giving a free concert. I don’t miss working, but I do miss my work friends. It was lovely to catch up with these two and talk (mostly) about things NOT related to work.

  • Our college friend Fran and her husband Sean showed us the spectacular views from their house in Glen Park, and then we had dinner at a charming Sardinian restauraunt nearby. Fran and Sean also love to travel, and thanks to them, we’re adding Costa Rica to our wish list.
