San Miguel Eats

This was our second month-long stay San Miguel de Allende, and we found it impossible to resist the allure of our favorite restaurants from last year. We did try a few places that were new to us. There are over 600 restaurants in San Miguel, so we have barely scratched the surface.

First, our top breakfast spots, all of which had excellent coffee (including my preference, cappuccino with oat milk):

  • La Cabra Illuminada was a small cafe by the owners of Don Taco Tequila. Who knew that plant-based breakfasts could be so tasty and satisfying?

  • Garambullo Fonda Gourmet had a particularly lovely courtyard with old stone walls, a jacaranda tree, and a tortoiseshell cat. I couldn't get enough of their light, creamy polenta with sautéed vegetables.

  • Panio was a regional bakery chain. We didn’t eat breakfast there during this stay, but we dropped in regularly to pick up pastries, freshly baked bread and butter cookies. I regret not buying more canelés when I had the chance.

Next, the lunch spots:

  • Baja Fish Taquito remained our favorite place for a simple, tasty lunch. With lovely views, this casual rooftop cantina may be the best bargain in town. Alas, they no longer served margaritas, but the local agave lager (Cervecería Allende) was an acceptable substitute.

  • The Tuesday Market, with its abundance of street food, was a new and memorable lunch experience. You can read about it HERE.

For happy hour or dinner:

  • Don Taco Tequila continued to impress us with its menu of creative and delicious vegan dishes. A new favorite was the guacamole, which was wonderfully complex with ground pumpkin seeds and reminded me of Rick Bayless’s version.

  • La Azotea also remained a favorite for both its rooftop views and tasty offerings. The jicama shrimp tacos were still wonderful. The guacamole had plenty of lime, the way we like it, and came with ultra-thin, crispy pork chicharrónes. Yum!

For my birthday, we dined at Nüuk Rooftop, a great place for Date Night. The terrace had stylish decor and gorgeous views of the city. The margs and food were great, but the sunset was the real star of the show.

At home, Steve made many tasty meals. He also made my favorite San Miguel treat: mango frappe margaritas with chamoy. Mmmmmm! He also brought home a giant chicharrón from the market, which I snacked on with garlic vinegar. (Don’t worry, I didn’t eat the whole thing.) And on our last night in San Miguel, we friends over for dinner and hired a private chef. You can read about it HERE.
