Union Square Greenmarket
On our first Saturday morning in New York City, we went to one of Steve’s favorite places: the Union Square Greenmarket. It was a beautiful sunny morning. Amy (who lives nearby) joined us, which meant Steve was in heaven!
We started with coffee and pastries from La Cabra, Amy’s favorite coffee shop. Everything was delicious, especially the cardamom bun (in the photo, it’s the knotted bun in the upper left).
En route to the market, we strolled through one of the city’s ubiquitous weekend street festivals. This one was called Dragon Fest. The colorful dumplings were tempting, but not what we had come for.
At Union Square Park was New York City’s oldest and largest farmers market, with 140 vendors and 60,000 visitors! The stalls were bursting with colorful fruits and vegetables - the abundance of fall harvests. There were plenty of fall flowers, too; I especially loved the dahlias with their bright hues and geometric petals. Steve was in his element! We bought flowers, bread, apples, cauliflower, kale, and a small basket of pretty (but deadly) hot peppers. It was tempting to get much more, but we plan to visit the Union Square Greenmarket on a regular basis (it’s open four days a week).
It’s wonderful to have access to an abundance of fresh organic produce, right in the middle of Manhattan. We like supporting local farms, and being outdoors in the gorgeous fall weather.
