2024
This is What Retirement Looks Like
Happy New Year! 2024 brought more than its share of natural disasters, global unrest, and historic elections. Some of our friends had to deal with hurricane damage and health issues. So we feel extra grateful for the blessings we had in 2024 as we took a leap of faith and embarked on a new way of life - an open-ended nomad adventure.
If you are already reading our blog, you know what we've been up to. If not, you can read the highlights below. The TL;DR is that we are now house-free, car-free, and job-free, and we are enjoying an unconventional nomad lifestyle. Over the past year, we lived in twelve different cities and vacationed in ten more. We reconnected with longtime friends and spent more time with our kids than if we had stayed in one place. Thankfully, we are in good health, fortified by plenty of walking and frequent doses of awe.
Who knows what 2025 will bring? It will be interesting to watch it happen from different places around the world. We wish you and your loved ones good health and happiness in the coming year, and we hope that our paths cross one day soon.
America the Beautiful
In February 2024, we embarked on a second Epic Road Trip in our little two-seater convertible. We spent a month each in New Orleans, Austin, Santa Fe, Boulder, and Chicago, and two months in New England. We drove 10,000 miles, visiting 29 states. We followed the good weather, visited many awe-inspiring places, and enjoyed time with family and friends.
Big City Adventures
At the end of September, we sold our car, dodged two Florida hurricanes, and settled in Manhattan for a couple of months. We gorged on Broadway shows and great food, and took long walks through Central Park and along the Hudson River. But mostly we enjoyed hanging out with Amy and connecting with friends.
World, Here We Come
After several months as a digital nomad, Steve decided Maria was having too much fun NOT working, and he retired from WTW on November 1. That made us free to be nomads abroad! We launched our international adventure with a vacation in beautiful, historic Vienna.
Bienvenido a México
We are now in the historic, artsy city of San Miguel de Allende, where the cobblestone streets are beautifully decorated for the holidays. Amy flew in from New York City, where she still lives in the East Village with her two roommates and works as a strategy consultant for EY. Danny and his girlfriend Mei flew in from Austin, where he continues to work with his two co-founders to grow their startup company, Legion Health. It was the first time in many years that we had celebrated Christmas somewhere other than Tampa. We had a fun and relaxing week together, discovering a new place (and practicing our Spanish).
