Moving Day: Asheville to Chicago
Our trip from Asheville to Chicago was mostly uneventful, which is the best kind of moving day (our move from Spain to NYC was something we’d rather not experience again). The flight itself was quick and smooth, so not much to report. But there were a few little things before the flight that are worth mentioning.
Our departure was delayed, which was actually good news because it meant we were able to relax in our wonderful condo for a few hours before checking out.
Our Lyft driver was a friendly Asheville native named Joel who drove us to the airport on a scenic road along the banks of the French Broad River. Joel told us about a real-life moonshiner he once met, a fellow named Popcorn Sutton with a big beard and overalls. Sutton had a long career in moonshine production and bootlegging until 2009, when he took his own life to avoid prison. It turns out Sutton is a minor celebrity and the subject of a full-length documentary.
At the Asheville Regional Airport, I decided to try the Eyewear Car Wash on my silver necklace from Mexico. The pendant definitely looked shinier after the wash, though I suspect a bit of jewelry cleaner would have done a better job. Oh well, it was fun to watch, and since we don’t have a car, it may be my last automated car wash.

While we sat at the gate waiting to board our plane, I booked another stay at the wonderful condo that we had just left. We’re going to return to Asheville for a month next spring. It was my first time rebooking a place less than an hour after checking out! Coincidentally, we were heading to Chicago to stay in the same apartment we lived in last summer. We may not have a permanent home, but we’re building a collection of great one-month homes. It’s all part of the fun of nomad life.
