First Week in Seville

I spent a good part of our first week in Seville at my laptop, writing about our adventures in Madrid and Toledo. I needed to clear out my brain before I could properly enjoy a new city. Steve spent much of the week visiting the markets and grocery stores nearby, stocking our small refrigerator and kitchen, and learning his way around the labyrinth of streets in our neighborhood. After all, nomad life means spending time on chores and other Life Stuff.

Andalusia, normally the sunniest region in Europe, was experiencing unusual rain for this time of year. Fortunately, there were periods of sunshine on most days, and we were able to take some walks around the Old Town. There were plenty of old churches, ornate iron balconies, colorful patterned tiles, and orange trees. There was so much to see!

In contrast to most of Casca Antiguo, Las Setas (The Mushrooms) was excitingly modern. It was fun to view its sweeping curves from different angles. Beneath Las Setas was a very nice market with produce, meats, seafood, and of course, jamón.

As we often do when we arrive in a new city, we took a guided walking tour for an introduction to Seville’s most famous buildings. We learned that the Old Town has three UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the Royal Alcazar, the Seville Cathedral, and the Archive of the Indies. What an embarrassment of riches. And we had our first look at the gorgeous Plaza de España! The tour was a great introduction to this historic and beautiful city. We couldn’t wait to return to these remarkable places for a closer look.
