New York City Family

Living in Manhattan for two months meant that we could spend time with family members on a regular basis. We were delighted that our daughter Amy joined us two or three times a week - for a meal, a movie, or a show. She has lived in New York City for more than two years, and loves her East Village neighborhood.

My sister Marg has lived in New York City since 1985, when she started attending Columbia University. She’s practically a native! Now Marg lives in Brooklyn with her wife Gabriella and their son Emmett, who is seven years old. Marg and I met for lunch every Friday, which was fun - we tried all sorts of restaurants near Grand Central Terminal. Steve, Amy and I attended Marg’s birthday party at their home, where we met some of their friends and neighbors. Gabriella served delicious sangria and tacos, and after gorging on birthday cake, we played a lively game of Apples to Apples. Fun!

We enjoyed seeing Steve’s family, too. His cousin Melanie (Mel) and her husband Mark flew in from Southern California to see their daughter Alexandra, who lives in Manhattan. We had a nice brunch at Sarabeth’s near Central Park with Mel, Mark, Alexandra and her new fiancé James, and James’s sister Olivia. Mel works for Macy’s, so we asked what they thought of the Thanksgiving Day Parade. They said they were surprised by how small the floats were - but then they’re used to the Rose Parade, whose floats would dwarf those of any other parade!

The highlight of our time in New York City was the final week, when my mom Susana visited from Jacksonville, and our son Danny visited from Austin. We had some great restaurant meals together, and went to see Wicked and Red One at the movie theater. Mom and I did some shopping, and she went to a couple of Broadway shows. Our family Thanksgiving Day was awesome (read more HERE).
