Thanksgiving Day in NYC

The highlight of our time in New York City was a family Thanksgiving, with my mom Susana (“Lola”) visiting from Jacksonville, and Danny visiting from Austin. It was the first time in years that we’d been with my sister and her family for Thanksgiving.

It was cold and rainy on Thanksgiving morning. Steve, Amy and I bundled up and walked over to 6th Avenue to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade - something we’ve always wanted to do. Despite the weather, there was a large and excited (and international) crowd.

Later, I walked with Lola to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and we enjoyed the holiday decorations along the way.

Amy’s friend Gaby - who danced with her at Patel Conservatory - and her brother John Paul joined us for the Thanksgiving meal. Steve managed to whip up a feast in our small apartment kitchen: Torrisi Turkey (my favorite), stuffing (Amy’s favorite), mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, and broccoli salad. Dessert was Brooklyn Blackout Cake from Little Cupcake Bakeshop. It was all delicious!

After dinner, Emmett led us in a raucous game of charades. Danny captured the whole evening using his nifty Osmo pocket camcorder. Here’s one of the automatically generated video clips:

As the song goes, “There’s no place like home for the holidays.” As nomads, we know that any space can be a home when your family is with you. It may have rained on THE parade, but we didn’t let it rain on OUR parade. We won’t need the videos to remember this Thanksgiving Day in NYC.
