Newport Walks
Accommodations in Newport during the summer are quite expensive, especially around the time of the annual music festivals (Newport Folk and Newport Jazz are on consecutive weekends). So we deviated from our usual pattern and stayed in Newport for a just 10 days instead of a month. The first few days, we were on vacation and enjoying Newport Jazz, so we stayed in a bed and breakfast. It was a charming Victorian house built in the 1880’s, and it was fun to have a delicious breakfast made to order every morning. There were plenty of restaurants and interesting buildings nearby on Broadway. We could walk to Newport Harbor and the Cliff Walk.
After the festival, we moved into a rented cottage for a week, so that we’d have more space for Steve to work. The cottage was built in the 1840’s, in a neighborhood called the Point, just two blocks from Narragansett Bay. The streets were lined with historic houses, many of them the former homes of sea captains. It was our favorite kind of location - a quiet residential area within walking distance of good restaurants and popular tourist spots.
We had rainy weather that week, so I didn’t walk as much as I had hoped. But we did have opportunities to walk along America’s Cup Avenue, Thames Street, Memorial Drive, Bellevue Avenue, and the wharfs. On our last night in Newport, after a delicious dinner at our favorite restaurant, we walked home along the water, enjoying the cool evening temperature and the sunset views.
