Nomad Meetups in San Miguel

It was a big week for meeting fellow nomads in San Miguel de Allende!

On Monday I had lunch with twenty other members of the GoWithLess Facebook group. It was fun to meet other people who, like us, had retired early, sold everything, and hit the road. It was fun to compare notes on where we had lived during the past year and where we planned to go next. Although most of us had sold our homes years ago, one couple had just purchased a house in San Miguel! There were so many things to talk about; topics included favorite cities, medical travel, ways to obtain residency in other countries, and, of course, food.

The GoWithLess Facebook group is quite large (nearly 19,000 members), and one of the group’s co-founders has created an app to help us connect more easily, and outside of the Meta platform. It will be interesting to see how well it works.

On Wednesday, we had the honor of meeting the original Senior Nomads, Debbie and Michael Campbell! This intrepid couple inspired me to try nomad life - I consider them real-life heroes. Debbie and Michael traveled full-time for twelve years, visiting 95 countries. They’ve been featured in dozens of articles and interviews - New York Times, Forbes, Rick Steves, Condé Nast Traveller, and many more. In the world of travelers and unconventional retirees, they are celebrities! The Senior Nomads Facebook group has over 19,000 members, so I was thrilled when Debbie said she remembered my posting about the blackout in Spain.

There were at least thirty of us there in the garden behind the Fabrica la Aurora, and we mingled for hours. Debbie had cleverly provided name tags; under each first name she had written a next (or wish list) destination. This made it easy to meet one another and strike up conversation. We chatted with other retired couples, digital nomads, and seasoned travel writers. After hearing many marvelous stories, I added several more destinations to my wish list.
