Our Home in San Francisco

In a previous lifetime (1989-1992), Steve and I lived in downtown San Francisco. The Loma Prieta earthquake had just rocked the city. The Dot-com Boom was in its early stages, and housing costs (and the homeless population) were just starting to rise. Steve and I were newlyweds with good jobs and no kids. We rode the wave of California cuisine that was sweeping across the country. We lived near Golden Gate Park and saw the Grateful Dead perform at a free concert in the Polo Field. We went wine tasting in Napa Valley, and that was free, too. Those were rosy years!

Last May, our son Danny moved to San Francisco’s Mission District, becoming part of the A.I. Boom. We were curious to see what the City by the Bay was like nowadays, after several booms and busts, so we rented a place in SOMA for a month.

Our apartment is comfortably furnished and well-equipped. It is also spacious, to put it mildly - the open kitchen-living-dining room has twenty-foot ceilings! It’s definitely a refreshing change from some of the “cozy” places we have rented in other cities.

Our neighborhood is more industrial than residential; we’re next to a freeway offramp and a large surface parking lot, so it’s not exactly picturesque. The good news is that we’re a short walk from grocery stores, pharmacies, and a MUNI stop, and about a mile from Oracle Park, the Ferry Building, and Union Square. So this is a great home base for exploring Downtown.
