NMAAHC (National Museum of African American History and Culture)

Art

The NMAAHC is amazing. It is also very popular - so be sure to visit the website 30 days in advance to get timed entry passes. I'll just share my favorite pieces from the new exhibit called Reckoning: Protest. Defiance. Resistance.

I Go to Prepare a Place for You | Bisa Butler, 2021 | cotton, silk, and velvet

Bisa Butler's intricate quilts were astounding. Zoom in on this quilted portrait of Harriet Tubman, and you'll see what I mean.

New Age of Slavery | Patrick Campbell, 2014 | watercolor on paper

This piece really moved me. And then I read the story behind it and was even more in awe.

Breonna Taylor | Amy Sherald, 2020 | oil on canvas

Sherald, who famously painted the official portrait of Michelle Obama, painted this for the cover of Vanity Fair. The portrait sits in a small, dark room by itself, glowing like a jewel. On an adjacent wall were little stories about Breonna growing up, as told by her mother. Heartbreaking.
