South Carolina Lowcountry Part I

May 7th

We just finished our first week working on the road. We're in a condo on Harbor Island, near Beaufort, SC. From the condo we have great views of the marsh and the Atlantic Ocean. A five minute stroll on the boardwalk across the sand dunes leads to the beach.

Beaufort (BEW-fuhrt) is a pretty town with preserved antebellum houses and a rich history as a progressive community of freed slaves during the Reconstruction.

Down the road from our condo is Hunting Island State Park, where we enjoyed a long hike one day after work. The trail ran beside a long lagoon. At the south end of the island is an aptly named "boneyard" covered with the skeletons of dead trees. At the north end is a pretty lighthouse.
