Arequipa Walks

One of our first walks was through the Mercado San Camilo, the market in the historical centre of Arequiopa. Highlights included an entire aisle of fresh fruit juice vendors and an impressive variety of potatoes.

We walked by the Plaza de Armas, the main square in the Historical Centre of Arequipa, almost every day. Distinctive white buildings and a multi-story colonnade surrounded a large park with towering palm trees. It was a great place for people-watching at any time of day or night.

Plaza de Yanahuara was historic square in our neighborhood. There were arches made from sillar (volcanic stone), a peaceful park, a pretty church, and panoramic views of Misti Volcano.

Speaking of volcanoes, they were often hiding behind clouds or shrouded in fog, even on sunny days. It was always exciting when the volcanoes came out to play.

Parque Selve Alegre (Happy Forest) was a pretty oasis amidst busy streets. We never did see any alpacas, though.

Other than the Plaza de Armas, there were not many places where I could walk for exercise. Steve found a pedestrian pathway that ran alongside Avenida Francisco Bolognesi, with a green balustrade and occasional views of the Chili River. But it wasn’t very long, and we had to navigate some busy streets to get there. I didn’t really mind; there plenty of interesting things to see everywhere I wandered in Arequipa.
