Austin Eats

Austin is known for great barbecue. La Barbecue, which is said to rival the famous Franklin Barbecue and Terry Black’s, was just two blocks from our cottage. I liked walking over at around 3pm on a weekday when there was no line. I’d get takeout and put it in the fridge, and we’d heat it up later for dinner. Their brisket and chipotle shells were absolutely delicious. And it was so convenient! (La Barbecue happens to be the first woman- and lesbian-owned barbecue restaurant in Texas. Read about its founder here.)

Other favorite restaurants in our neighborhood:

  • Juan in a Million had a ginormous and tasty breakfast taco that could easily feed 2-3 people. Juan was very friendly and enjoyed visiting every table for a quick chat.

  • Bufalina had the most delicious caesar salad we’d ever had. And their Neapolitan-style pizza had perfectly crisp crust and wonderful flavors. Outstanding.

  • Launderette was in a converted laundromat/gas station. We enjoyed dinner so much that we returned two days later for brunch. They get bonus points for special details.

  • Canje had delicious, inventive Caribbean cuisine and a fun atmosphere - I posted about it here.

Finally, we tried a couple of our son Danny’s favorite spots:

  • Rockin’ Rolls was a food truck specializing in sourdough pizza rolls. Yummy!

  • Aba was a hip Mediterranean place in South Congress. We couldn't get a reservation, so we sat at the outdoor bar on a beautiful afternoon and had a great time. We returned to Aba another day with the kids (this time with a reservation) - I wrote about it here.
